Little Things That Add UP - By Shaindy Oberlander, BeneFIT Health
I like to keep you informed and updated as I explore different products so that you can be informed and understand what can easily be swapped out for a cleaner and healthier product.
Take the above photo for instance. Let's explore the sugar content here:
Marinara sauce- a half a cup has 8 grams of sugars, 3 of which are added sugars.
Ketchup- a tablespoon of ketchup has 4 grams of added sugars. (Most of them have corn syrup too)
Tomato sauce- a 1/4 cup has 2 grams of natural sugars
Every squirt of ketchup amounts. Have 3 tablespoons of ketchup and that is a whopping 12 grams of sugar. 12 grams sugar = 1 tablespoon (tbsp) sugar
(For example: a can of soda contains 140 calories and 38 grams of sugar. By dividing 38 grams by 4 grams sugar, we end up with 9.5 teaspoons. By dividing 38 grams by 12 grams sugar, we end up with 3.2 tablespoons of sugar.)
Based on this we can understand that sugar can be ingested in a myriad of ways without us meaning to consume sugar. It's not like you were consciously thinking "Let me grab a candy now", but with many squirts of ketchup, you sorta grabbed that candy, inadvertently.....
We use ketchup a lot in my house. It's ok. But I want you to understand that little things as such can stall your weight loss process as sugar is converted to glucose and extra glucose gets stored as fuel for later in the form of....fat!
(If people consume more carbohydrates than they need at the time, the body stores some of these carbohydrates within cells as glycogen and converts the rest to fat. Glycogen is a complex carbohydrate that the body can easily and rapidly convert to energy. Glycogen is stored in the liver and the muscles.)
I prefer to make my own tomato sauce, keep it handy and use it for anything I need it for.
I take a can of tomato sauce and liberally add spices such as paprika, oregano, minced onion, black pepper, parsley flakes etc. It is yum and definitely better for you, whether you are on weight loss or not.
